Prosumers – who are they?
With regard to photovoltaics, a prosumer is a person who generates electricity from renewable energy sources (RES), i.e. From photovoltaic panels, for its own use. It can be an individual, such as a single-family homeowner, or an entrepreneur, such as a business owner.
According to the Ministry of Climate and Environment, the development of photovoltaics in Poland is very dynamic. The end of 2015 brought 4,000 prosumers, and by the end of 2023, we already had more than 1.3 million prosumers. That’s why today, we have more than 10 GW of installed capacity in prosumer photovoltaic installations!
Prosument – NET-BILLING billing system
The current billing system for prosumers is effective as of April 1, 2022. Previous owners of photovoltaic installations are billed on a NET-METERING basis. Net-metering covers installations up to 50 kWp. The energy produced is given back to the system and later can be drawn from it. “The exchange” takes place on the basis of: 1:0,8. That is, by giving 1000 kWh to the grid, we can take 800 kWh from it.
The change from NET-METERING to NET-BILLING concerns the method of billing. In net-metering we accounted for quantity and in net-billing we account for value. As the ministry’s website reads:
“The primary goal of this system is to reduce the prosumer’s household electricity bills by increasing the self-consumption of the energy they produce.“
So it’s mainly about increasing prosumer awareness of electricity consumption. The intention is for the prosumer to use electricity when he or she has the greatest need for energy (self-consumption) and draw from the grid when it is cheapest.
