Who invests in a photovoltaic farm?

There are not many options for Polish manufacturing companies to control the price of electricity consumed in their factories and plants! Well, unless we build ourselves a photovoltaic farm….

In recent years we have seen a dynamic development of the photovoltaic market in Poland. Investments in renewable energy sources, especially photovoltaics, are becoming increasingly popular not only among individual users, but also in the business sector. So why should medium and large Polish companies consider building their own photovoltaic farm?

Electricity prices in Poland are rising year after year. According to data from the Energy Regulatory Office, the average selling price of electricity for businesses in the second quarter of 2023 was about 700 PLN/MWh, recording significant increases. Investment in a photovoltaic farm allows companies to produce their own energy, resulting in a significant reduction in dependence on external suppliers and protection from power price increases.

Let’s assume that a medium-sized company decides to install a 1 MW photovoltaic farm. The cost of the investment may be about 3.5-4 million PLN. Who invests in a photovoltaic farm?

Assuming that PV farms can produce an average of 1,000 MWh of energy per year for each MW of installed capacity, the savings can be significant. At current energy prices, the company could save a lot of money annually. This gives a payback period of about 6-7 years, not including possible subsidies or tax credits.

Investing in green energy contributes to a positive corporate image. Companies that actively work on environmental protection and sustainability are better perceived by customers, business partners and employees. It is also an important element of CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) strategy, which increasingly determines the choice of business partners.

Trends in the energy market indicate that energy prices will continue their increases.

Investment in a photovoltaic farm is therefore not only a way to reduce ongoing operating costs. It also provides a forward-looking hedge against energy price volatility. A photovoltaic farm is also a very valuable asset for any company. You can always sell it and get a return on your investment faster!
